A Day of Discovery on Brightlingsea’s Shores

The Pioneer Sailing Trust was delighted to welcome students from The Gilberd School for an exciting multi-activity day designed to connect young people with Brightlingsea’s proud maritime heritage and local marine environment.

The activities included a session at the Brightlingsea Museum, where students explored the town’s rich maritime history — discovering stories of shipbuilding, fishing, and seafaring that have shaped the local community for generations. This introduction provided valuable context for the hands-on learning that followed.

Next, students took part in a water safety session, a particularly important activity as several participants had never had swimming lessons before. The session helped build their understanding of how to stay safe around water, equipping them with essential life skills that promote confidence and awareness in marine settings.

Out on the shoreline, the group rolled up their sleeves for a creek dredging activity in Brightlingsea Creek. Here, they discovered the incredible diversity of local marine wildlife — from jellyfish and small crabs to tiny fish — and learned about the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems. After observing their finds up close, everything was carefully returned to the water, reinforcing lessons about conservation and respect for the natural world.

The day also included a truly memorable experience: learning to sail aboard the historic Pioneer CK18, our restored skillinger smack dating back to 1864. Working together as a crew, the students developed teamwork, communication, and resilience while experiencing the thrill of sailing on an iconic piece of maritime history.

This partnership with The Gilberd School encapsulates what the Pioneer Sailing Trust strives to achieve — inspiring young people through hands-on learning, adventure, and connection to the sea, while celebrating the heritage and environment of Brightlingsea.

Thanks you for a fabulous experience on Monday-the kids had a great day and have been telling others all about what they got up to.
