From Stage to Sea: A Team-Building Adventure Aboard the Pioneer

This summer, the Colchester Arts Centre team swapped their iconic venue for the open waters, joining the Pioneer Sailing Trust for a unique team-building experience aboard the historic sailing smack, Pioneer CK18. As part of their 2025 summer work outing, the team set sail from Brightlingsea for a day filled with adventure, teamwork, and laughter — a refreshing change from their usual creative hub.

Colchester Arts Centre is known for its vibrant programme of live music, theatre, and cultural events, but this time, the team became the performers of their own maritime adventure. For many, it was their first time sailing, and stepping aboard the 1864 skillinger smack offered both a challenge and an opportunity to connect in a completely new way.

Throughout the day, the crew learned the basics of traditional sailing — hoisting sails, taking the helm, and working together to keep the vessel steady. As they navigated the waters around Brightlingsea, the group discovered how communication, trust, and teamwork are just as vital at sea as they are in the arts. The shared sense of accomplishment and the peaceful rhythm of sailing created a perfect setting for reflection, connection, and fun.

By the end of the voyage, the team had not only enjoyed an unforgettable day out but had also deepened their working relationships and sense of camaraderie. Their enthusiasm was clear — many described the experience as “completely different to what we usually do for work.”

We’re thrilled that Colchester Arts Centre chose to make the Pioneer part of their team-building journey, and we’re already looking forward to welcoming them back aboard next year for another day of sailing, teamwork, and shared adventure.

The best part of the trip was getting to try something new all together that was completely different to what we usually do for work
