Case Study
St Lawrence Primary School
St Lawrence Primary School pupils spent an exciting multi-activity day with the Pioneer Sailing Trust, Brightlingsea Harbour and the Brightlingsea Museum, immersing themselves in the area’s maritime history. Through shoreline exploration and practical workshop tasks, the children developed new skills, boosted their confidence, and strengthened their understanding of the local marine environment.

A Day of Coastal Discovery and Hands-On Learning
The Pioneer Sailing Trust hosted St Lawrence Primary School for a full day of discovery in Brightlingsea. Children learned about the town’s maritime past, took part in hands-on shoreline activities, and worked on practical projects that helped them grow in confidence and connect more closely with their coastal surroundings.
The day included a visit to Brightlingsea Museum, where pupils learned about the town’s deep-rooted maritime traditions. They discovered tales of shipbuilding, fishing, and life at sea, gaining a fascinating insight into the heritage that has shaped the local community. This experience set the scene perfectly for the practical activities students were also able to participate in throughout the day.
Afterwards, the group took part in a water safety session — an especially valuable opportunity, as some children had never received swimming instruction before. The session helped them understand how to stay safe near and on the water, giving them important life skills that build confidence and awareness in coastal environments.
Out on the shoreline, pupils got stuck into a creek-dredging activity in Brightlingsea Creek. As they sifted through the muddy shallows, they uncovered an impressive variety of marine life — from jellyfish and tiny fish to small crabs — gaining a first-hand appreciation of the rich biodiversity along our coast. After examining each creature, the group returned everything safely to the water, reinforcing the importance of conservation and caring for delicate marine habitats.
Another highlight of the day was the chance to sail aboard the historic Pioneer CK18, a beautifully restored 1864 skillinger smack. Working together as a crew, the children learned how to handle the vessel, developing teamwork, communication, and resilience while experiencing the excitement of sailing a remarkable piece of maritime heritage.
This collaboration with St Lawrence Primary School reflects the essence of the Pioneer Sailing Trust’s mission: to inspire young people through practical learning, adventure, and a meaningful connection to the sea, while celebrating Brightlingsea’s unique maritime history and environment.
